The Massachusetts men’s soccer team added another major scoring threat Monday as they announced the signing of Jackson Fotter to the Minutemen for the 2017 campaign.

Fotter was one of the top high school soccer players in Maine, scoring 31 goals for Gorham High School, while helping lead the Rams to the Class A championship game where Gorham lost to Bangor High School.

“We are very excited to welcome Jackson to the UMass soccer family,” UMass coach Fran O’Leary said in a UMass athletics press release after the announcement Monday. “He is another addition to our program who will help us improve our offensive capabilities as we continue working to compete at the upper levels of the Atlantic 10.”

“Having lived in Maine for several years, I am well versed in the quality of players that come out of the state. Jackson is a versatile player who is comfortable on the wing and upfront. He possesses great dribbling ability and has a good strike rate in front of goal. We are excited to add him to our attacking corps,” O’Leary added.

The forward racked up a whole slew of accolades while playing for the Rams. During his high school career, he was a two-time All-Maine, two-time all-region and three-time all-conference selection.

He finished his Gorham career with 65 total goals and was named the Maine Telegram Player of the year his senior year.

On top of his high school soccer participation, Fotter also played club soccer with Seacoast United Under-17 premier squad, where he helped lead the team to two national titles.

Fotter becomes the fifth newcomer to the men’s soccer program for next season, joining Christian Carucci, Eli Cronin, Davis Smith and Jack Fulton.

Fulton signed a national letter of intent with the Minutemen last week.

UMass players honored

Three UMass lacrosse players were honored this week for their recent play.

Women’s lacrosse attacker Hannah Burnett was named A-10 player of the week and teammate Sarah Crowley was named co-defensive player of the week. Men’s lacrosse freshman midfielder Jeff Trainor was named Colonial Athletic Association rookie of the week as well.

Burnett tallied a total of 17 points over the last two games this week, notching 12 goals and five assists. In the Minutewomen’s 24-14 win over Saint Joseph’s Sunday, she set a new UMass record for goals in a single game with eight. Burnett currently leads the Minutewomen with 30 goals this season. The next top scorer is Hannah Murphy with 19.

Crowley tallied six caused turnovers, seven groundballs and three draw controls over the two games last week. The New York native currently leads UMass with 27 caused turnovers and 33 ground balls. Her 2.7 caused turnovers per game puts her atop the category in the A-10 and seventh nationally.

Trainor tallied four points in the Minutemen’s 9-6 win over Delaware Saturday with two goals and two assists.

The honors were the second time all three players had received that recognition this season.

The Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team is carrying its six-game winning streak into its first road conference game this season against Davidson.

“I think we embrace going on the road actually because we sort of love the team time,” UMass coach Angela McMahon said. “At the same time, it is a business trip. We’re going there to perform well and hopefully have our best game of the season on Friday.”

The Minutewomen (7-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10) are coming off a record-setting victory against Saint Joseph’s. Hannah Burnett led the team with a school-record eight goals and added two assists to surpass the UMass record for points in a game as well. The team also accumulated 24 total goals, tying the program record.

For McMahon, a win against the Wildcats would place her two games shy of 50 consecutive A-10 conference wins.

“I think we just try to play in the moment,” McMahon said. “[We] focus on the little things within the game that if we do all of those things well, consistently, through 60 minutes then hopefully we have a good result.”

Midfielder Hannah Murphy, a senior, acknowledged the pressure her team has felt throughout the seemingly never-ending conference win streak, referring to it as “good pressure.”

“I think we try to channel that pressure into just positive motivation because we hold ourselves to a higher standard,” Murphy said. “We want to keep that winning streak going obviously.”

Davidson (3-6, 1-1 A-10) recently broke its five-game losing streak, dating back to March 5, against Jacksonville with a 14-11 victory against George Washington last Sunday. The win came after the Wildcats opened the second half on a 6-1 run after trailing 8-6 at halftime. Three of those five goals marked a career-high for junior Christine Molinari while her four total points were a personal best.

During their losing streak, the Wildcats scored under 10 goals in each of their five games, revealing the team’s recent offensive struggles. They’ve accumulated 78 total goals this season, while the Minutewomen have netted 131.

Burnett and Holly Turner are currently tied as point leaders for the Minutewomen with 37. Burnett has 30 total goals, 14 of which occurred in the last three games. She adds seven assists and was recently named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week as well as Student-Athlete of the Week.

Murphy continues to lead the A-10 in draw controls, averaging 8.50 per game, helping UMass as a team top the conference in draw controls as well, averaging 15.10 per game.

The Wildcats rank ninth in draw controls averaging 9.44 per game and have accumulated 85 total this season. Murphy has 85 draw controls on the season alone.

“[We’re] playing really hard in practice and preparing ourselves for the upcoming game,” McMahon said. “I think we’ll try to be a little bit more goal-oriented as oppose to winning-oriented.”

Annie Brocket leads Davidson in points with 21 goals and five assists for 26 points. As a team, Davidson has accumulated 77 caused turnovers, led by Mackenzi Sivilli who has 12 on the season thus far.

The Minutewomen are led by Sarah Crowley in caused turnovers with 27, contributing to the team’s total of 126. The senior was recently named the A-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week, and leads the A-10 in caused turnovers per game (2.70) which ranks seventh nationally.

“Everyone is pretty excited and I think that we’re not getting comfortable which has been the talk,” Murphy said. “Because we have to keep holding ourselves to a high standard, we can’t let up even a little bit because we don’t want to lose.”

The Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team is rolling right now. Winners of six straight, UMass (7-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10) has found its stride offensively and then some, scoring 43 goals in its previous two games with redshirt junior Hannah Burnett, who has torched the competition, leading the charge, registering 27 goals since March 5.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Minutewomen have come a long way since their 1-3 start to the season, and a major catalyst in the turnaround has been senior midfielder Sarah Crowley.

The former Harborfields High School standout from Greenlawn, New York has been a revelation on the backend for UMass. Crowley has taken a defensive unit that lost three stud players in Amber Tobin and Kate and Anne Farnham and has become the go-to player for Minutewomen coach Angela McMahon on defense.

“Sarah just has a knack for the ball,” McMahon said. “She tracks the ball, she sees the ball well and she really anticipates plays and makes plays well. I think all of our defenders have different strengths and weaknesses, but for that to be her strength, we need that.”

“She’s been working with these defenders now for a few years that she’s playing with and I think there’s a comfort level there,” McMahon added. “They work really well together and she’s a really great teammate.”

Crowley has been bustling in front of the UMass net lately, causing turnover after turnover, with her best outing coming March 25 against Marist. In the Minutewomen’s 10-7 win, Crowley had six caused turnovers, a season high, combined with six ground balls in what was a back-and-forth affair for UMass.

In the Minutewomen’s most recent game against Saint Joseph’s, Crowley was flying up and down the field, making numerous impressive plays in front of their cage. She finished the game with four caused turnovers and four ground balls, an effort that resulted in being named the Co-Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week.

“As a defensive unit we’ve been going for everything scrappy and that’s what I’ve been focusing on too,” Crowley said. “Everything that hits the ground has to be yours, everything that’s in the air has to be yours. Once it’s in their stick there’s not much you can do about it except go hard. Everything else you just have to be scrappy on.”

That scrappy attitude has been effective for the most part as UMass has only allowed 10 goals or more once since its winning streak commenced, and that was against Saint Joe’s, when it surrendered 14. Caused turnovers have been critical for the success of the Minutewomen, who have tallied 126 total compared to their opponents who have managed just 93.

“We lost a lot but everyone has stepped up,” Crowley said. “We saw it as a rebuilding year in the fall and once the spring hit we saw it has ‘OK this is our team.’ It doesn’t matter what we lost, we can rebuild it ourselves and build our own strong unit.”

As a senior, Crowley has been the stalwart on defense UMass needed and admitted to taking it upon herself to be a leader before the season started.

“Ever since we lost those girls last year, myself, Taylor [Fischer], and Allison [Ryan] have put out our shoulder space and lifted up all the younger girls and make sure they act like they are just as old as we are,” Crowley said. “Everyone just needs to step up especially since we lost a lot of talent but we have a lot of talent to give and to show.”

“She’s getting involved in the offense, which is great because we like getting defense involved in the offense as much as we can,” McMahon said. “She’s constantly picking people apart, reading plays, anticipating, and it’s definitely the best season of play we’ve seen out of her.”

Crowley and the rest of the Minutewomen squad will be back in action Friday when they travel to North Carolina to take on Davidson.

UMass women’s lacrosse wins 10th straight in 19-5 win over St. Bonaventure

The Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team won its 51st consecutive game over an Atlantic 10 opponent in Saturday’s 19-5 win over St. Bonaventure.

UMass (11-3, 6-0 A-10) extended its current win-streak to 10 in the victory over the Bonnies (3-10, 1-4 A-10) and concluded its quick two-game road swing with two wins.

“It was a great road trip,” Minutewomen coach Angela McMahon said. “We scored a lot of goals and a lot of different people stepped up for us.”

Redshirt sophomore Kiley Anderson was one of those players who stepped up for UMass as she scored a team-high five goals Saturday.  Anderson now sits in second place in total goals scored for the Minutewomen and is nine behind redshirt junior Hannah Burnett for the team lead.

“She’s really aggressive and is putting herself in a good position,” McMahon said of Anderson. “She’s playing with confidence, is fearless, and is playing well with her teammates right now. Plus it helps when she’s 6-foot-3.”

Anderson rounded out a tremendous week, as she scored five the game before against La Salle last Thursday.

UMass got going right away against St. Bonaventure and never looked back. Not even two minutes had gone by in the contest before the Minutewomen were already up 3-0. This momentum carried over for the majority of the half as they stretched that lead to 8-0 by the 14-minute mark and to 12-1 by halftime.

Burnett got the scoring started 49 seconds into play and was soon followed by junior Holly Turner and sophomore Cassidy Doster. Turner and Doster finished the afternoon tied with Anderson in points with five (two goals, three assists each) while Turner also passed the 50-point plateau in the game as well.

Junior Abby Walker had a breakout game offensively for UMass as she set a new season-high in points with four (three goals, assist), including a man-down goal in the Minutewomen’s opening half 8-0 run.

The defense for UMass was just as active as the one goal allowed in the first half was the lowest in any half this season for the Minutewomen. The defensive outing was almost record breaking as UMass had 22 total caused turnovers, two shy of its program record of 24 set in 2015 against UMass Lowell.

“We’re really engaged and playing well as a unit,” McMahon said about her team’s stout defensive game. “We read plays well and knocked a lot of balls down.”

Senior Hannah Murphy was busy on the defensive side of the ball as she tied her career-high with five caused turnovers to go along with six draw controls and five ground balls. Seniors Taylor Fischer and Allison Ryan also had career games in the backfield as Fischer had a career-best five caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Ryan matched her career-high with four caused turnovers.

The Minutewomen scored seven more goals in the second half, with five of them coming during running time, before St. Bonaventure went on its best run of the game scoring three in a row. Walker and freshman Stephanie Croke scored in the final minutes to make it 19-5.

Freshman Emma Dostikas scored her first career goal, while freshman goalkeeper Lauren Hiller made five saves in 45 minutes played before sophomore Aileen Kelly minded the cage for the remaining 15 minutes making five saves also.

Scarlet Jaworski led the Bonnies with a couple of goals and goalkeepers Morgan Conway (17 saves) and Kerrigan Cummins split time in the cage.

“It was a long road trip with a lot of travel but I liked how we started,” McMahon said. “We responded great and now have a nice break before closing out the A-10 regular season.”

UMass outshot St. Bonaventure 39-20 and also had the upper-hand in draw controls (14-10) and ground balls (34-21) in the win.
